Crispy panko-breaded slices of SPAM® classic, eggs and veggies go into the pan and you’ve got classic Japanese flavour.
Ingredients
Katsudon Sauce:
1½ tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
1½ tbsp cooking sherry or soju
¼ tsp salt
Oil for deep frying
½ cup flour
1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
2 eggs, divided
1 (340g) can SPAM® Classic, cut into 4 slices
1 tsp oil
1/4 cup sliced onion
1/4 cup sliced leeks
4 cups cooked Japanese rice
Directions
Katsudon Sauce:
In small microwaveable bowl, combine sauce ingredients. Microwave on HIGH (100%) 30 to 40 seconds or until heated and sugar is dissolved.
SPAM® Katsu:
In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, heat oil to 360°F/182°C. Place flour, breadcrumbs and 1 egg in separate shallow bowls. Lightly beat egg. Dredge SPAM® Classic slices with flour. Dip in egg and coat with breadcrumbs. Fry in oil until golden brown. Slice and set aside.
SPAM® Katsudon:
In medium skillet over medium heat, heat oil; cook onion and leeks 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Top with sliced SPAM® Katsu.
Beat remaining egg. Pour over sliced SPAM® Katsu. Pour Katsudon Sauce over sliced SPAM® Katsu. Cover; simmer 30 to 45 seconds or until egg is cooked through.
